Artist Statement

Duncan Tonatiuh

I grew up in Mexico, but I moved to the United States when I was a teenager. As I spent more time in the U.S., I began to miss things that were always around me as a kid like the food, the music, and the different traditions. While in college I became very interested in the art and culture of Mexico. I became especially interested in the Mesoamerican codices. Hundreds of years ago, different civilizations like the Mixtecs, the Aztecs, and the Maya made books. The drawings they painted in them were very stylized, flat, and geometric because the drawings were not only images; they were also words that could be read. I try to draw in a similar style, but I use the computer to collage textures into my artwork. I find this an interesting way of honoring a long and rich art tradition.
