Drawing from observation, personal experience, and research, my latest series of figurative oil paintings explores how women navigate beauty standards. The artworks portray conformity, resistance, and the consequences of both. Painted in the style of magical realism, some pieces depict these experiences literally, while others convey them symbolically or subtly. Among the works in the series are The Fountain of Youth (Magic Water), which symbolizes society’s obsession with reversing aging by portraying women conforming to beauty standards as they enter the magic water to regain youth; The Gazer, which portrays a woman looking back at the viewer, asserting power and awareness as she recognizes that she is being seen and chooses how to engage with that gaze instead of remaining a passive object; and Body Grief 1, which addresses the negative consequences of striving to conform, depicting the grief a woman experiences as her body changes and representing the emotional impact of not meeting beauty ideals. By presenting these varied perspectives, my work reveals the complexities that shape women’s identities and encourages dialogue about the influence of societal norms.
